Also available as instant and non-instant downloads in a choice of sizes (A4 and US Letter) and a choice of backgrounds from our other website at HistoryofNames.net.

This product is available either printed or as a high quality printable download. For downloadable products normally on a parchment background, you can choose a plain white (or no) background if you would rather print on your own parchment or other paper. Our downloads and printing help page can be found here.

These surname histories (origin and meaning) with the associated surname coat of arms (sometimes called a family crest) are printed with an ancient parchment background as shown in the product image. These are printed on matt photo paper for the best quality.

The surname history text includes known spelling variants of the surname, the origin and meaning of the surname (if more than one origin and meaning is known these are also included), the earliest known recording of the surname and the ancient manuscripts they appear in (often starting from the 11th and 12th centuries – 1000s and 1100s), interesting details about the early use and spellings of surnames, any notable name-bearers throughout the centuries, an explanation of early coats of arms use, and the heraldic blazon (coat of arms and crest descriptions), and if a motto exists, translation from its original language (i.e. Latin, French, Gaelic, etc.) into English.

Features of this product include:

Green Tick Mark High quality printing and content on A4 (297 x 210 mm or 11.75 x 8.25 inches) matt photo paper.

Green Tick Mark Fully authentic coat of arms and surname history. These are historically correct and accurate as recorded in ancient documents and can be researched yourself to verify the details.

Green Tick Mark Available for most British or Irish surnames, and some European and international surnames. You can search for names here or feel free to contact us and with the name(s) required.

Green Tick Mark You can specify a preferred country of origin for the coat of arms and surname when ordering so that any specific details relating to that country can be included. You can also specify any preferred coat of arms when ordering – many surnames have more than one coat of arms registered.

Green Tick Mark Unless a specific image is requested, we will normally use the oldest coat of arms most associated with the surname.

Green Tick Mark Supplied ready for framing in the standard A4 size. Frames are available off-the-shelf from many high street and web shops.

Why order a download version?

  • Downloadable orders will normally be with you the same day or within 24-48 hours.
  • No lost in the post, damaged in the post, undeliverable issues due to inaccurate postal addresses or postal delays, and no need to wait several days or weeks for orders to arrive internationally (and sometimes within the UK), which can also be delayed by customs and other issues.
  • No added postal or packaging charges.
  • Downloadable orders can be ordered by anyone, anywhere.
  • You are free to print on your own parchment or other lightly patterned paper or photo paper, or display as required, i.e. save a (JPG) copy on a tablet device, computer, or online photo album.
  • A downloadable order is ideal if you’re in a hurry and need it quicker than a printed version would arrive.

The digital download versions are of the same high quality as the print versions. These can be printed at home using an inkjet, colour laser or similar printer. We recommend printing borderless on matt photo paper (A4 or US Letter) for best results.

They can also be printed with the outer white border if being framed with a mount by a picture framing shop or service. These can also be printed at a local or online ‘print shop’ or anywhere you can have photos printed at the required size.

Help and tips for our product printing and downloads can be found here.
